Did you know that Litchfield Park was recognized by “Phoenix Magazine” as “one of the 8 best places to live in Arizona”? Litchfield Park, AZ is a beautiful, small city of approximately 5,000 residents, located 15 miles West of Downtown Phoenix. If you like a small town feel, enjoy arts and crafts festivals and outdoor concerts, you’ll come to love this beautiful city as many of its current residents do. Annual events include a Fair, Native American Arts Festival, Christmas in the Park and the Litchfield Park Annual 4th of July Celebration. Most of Litchfield Park’s award-winning special events take place at or near the Wigwam Resort and Spa, a Four Diamond Resort with three 18 hole champion golf courses and the Red Door Spa.
The area currently known as Litchfield Park was originally settled in early 1910 when the first land claims were filed by William Kriegbaum of Riverside, CA. William claimed the 640 acres which includes the land which now is the City’s downtown area and what we now refer to as Old Town Litchfield Park. The initial plan of the earliest settlers was to develop the area west of the Agua Fria River(the large empty, dry river bed about a half mile form down town Litchfield) as citrus groves.
In 1916, Akron, Ohio-based Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company sent Paul W. Litchfield, then a junior executive with the Company, to purchase a huge land parcel in this area – ultimately 16,000 acres, which included the land claims of the original settlers. The goal was to grow Egyptian long-staple cotton for use in reinforcing straight-sided pneumatic automobile and truck tires.
As many folks have over the years, Paul Litchfield came to love this area and made Litchfield Ranch into the headquarters for Southwest Cotton Company (later know as Goodyear Farms). In the 1920’s Paul and Florence Litchfield built their beautiful winter estate, “Rancho La Loma”, on the hill overlooking the town site and the town was officially named Litchfield Park in 1926. The Wigwam Resort began as a simple guest housing for visiting Goodyear Tire executives. It was then expanded and opened as a public resort in November, 1929. Paul Litchfield was also instrumental in the establishment of Luke Air Force base just north of the community and Litchfield Park grew extensively during and after World War II. Litchfield Park was incorporated as a city in 1987.
Litchfield Park is located near the western edge of the West Valley, with distant views of the majestic White Tank Mountains. With its close proximity to the Loop 101 and I-10 Freeways, business commuters venturing into downtown Phoenix have an easy 16 mile jaunt. The city butts up to North Goodyear and Avondale on its Southern end and to the North it meets ups with Glendale, Surprise and El Mirage.
Litchfield park boasts 300 plus days of annual sunshine. Winter days you’ll find average temperatures in the mid 60s with lows in the 40s. Summer days get hot with average temps in the low 100s. We have been know to throw in a monsoon storm or two during summer months to cool things off a bit and keep local meteorologists excited. Spring and Fall months are absolutely fantastic with temps in the 70s allowing outdoors lovers to get out and explore the natural beauty of our Arizona desert.
